Sonoma County is bigger than Napa, more agricultural, less curated. The wineries vary widely in character: Buena Vista is California's oldest commercial winery (founded 1857, still operating in its original Sonoma plaza location). Iron Horse is a sparkling specialist with a hilltop tasting room overlooking the Russian River Valley. Gloria Ferrer does Spanish-style cava-method sparkling in the Sonoma Carneros. The chauffeur who works Sonoma needs to know which tasting venues have parking, which have shuttle service from the road, which require advance reservation, and which still take walk-ins on a Tuesday.
Hourly chauffeur service is the right structure for most Sonoma trips: longer drives between wineries, less predictable timing, room for spontaneous stops at the cheese shops in Petaluma or a detour to Bodega Bay for oysters. What we know about driving the county.
Geographic flow
South Sonoma to Glen Ellen to Kenwood is the natural Sonoma Valley tour route (about 18 miles, three wineries). Healdsburg is a separate trip; the drive from Sonoma plaza is 35-40 minutes, so a single day rarely combines both regions. Russian River wineries are concentrated west of Healdsburg along Westside Road and Eastside Road.
