About us

We started this in 2018 because the chauffeur companies we'd worked for were getting bigger and the service was getting worse.

Marin-based. Family-run. Ten vehicles. Same drivers, year after year.

Why Marin

This is the company I wanted to ride in.

I grew up in Mill Valley. My father commuted across the Golden Gate every weekday for thirty-one years, and I rode the back of his Volvo through the Waldo Tunnel before I could read. I knew the 101 the way most kids know cereal brands.

I started driving for one of the big Bay Area chauffeur companies in 2007. Spent eleven years there. I drove for executives at Salesforce and Wells Fargo, families flying in from Lufthansa at SFO Terminal A, brides at Cavallo Point, and one music producer who liked to take long midnight loops through the Presidio. The work was good. The company got bigger. The service got worse.

By 2017, dispatchers were rotating drivers on regular accounts to "balance fleet utilization." The same client who had ridden with me on Tuesday would ride with a stranger on Friday. New chauffeurs were not being trained on Bay Area routing. Cars were being washed less frequently. I watched a Friday-night wedding pickup arrive with last week's coffee cup still in the cupholder.

I started Marin Star in 2018 with the principle that broke at the old company. The same chauffeur drives your trips. The same car if you want it. We do not run forty vehicles to chase utilization. We run ten, all of them ours, all of them prepared the morning of a trip.

Who drives

Five chauffeurs. All Bay Area, all years in.

The team

We run a small team because chauffeur work is craft work. Four chauffeurs and the dispatcher who answers the phone. Three of the chauffeurs have been with us since the first year. The longest-tenured driver has been doing chauffeur work in the Bay Area for nineteen years. Two are former military. All are licensed under the California PUC TCP permit we hold; all carry commercial driver insurance; all have clean DMV records reviewed every six months.

What we screen for

We do not hire by chauffeur certification alone. We hire by route knowledge and temperament. Every new driver takes a Bay Area routing test before their first ride, with us. They have to know that the 101 through Larkspur Landing backs up on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. They have to know which SFO terminal Lufthansa uses (Terminal A, international). They have to know that the back gate at Domaine Carneros saves fifteen minutes during peak tasting season.

Continuity

If you book with us regularly, you ride with the same chauffeur. Your driver learns your timing, your route habits, and your preferences for everything from climate to conversation. It is not a feature we charge extra for. It is the way the business is supposed to work, and the reason most of our regulars never think about a car to the airport.

What we believe

Six things we do not negotiate on.

The price you are quoted is the price you pay.

No surcharge for tolls. No fuel surcharge. No surge pricing on Friday nights. The quote we send is the quote you pay. The only number that can change after the quote is the wait time, which we tell you up front.

We do not absorb missed flights.

Flight tracking is included on every airport transfer. If your flight lands 40 minutes early, we are there 40 minutes early. If it lands 90 minutes late, we are there 90 minutes late. The first 60 minutes of wait after wheels-down are free.

The chauffeur is your point of contact.

Not a dispatcher. Not a help desk number. The driver who picks you up sends you the pickup details, monitors your flight, and answers questions during the trip. You build a relationship with a person, not a brand.

The cars stay clean.

Every vehicle gets a wash and interior detail the morning of any trip. A monthly deep clean. Quarterly mechanical inspection. The Friday night wedding pickup arrives in a car that was vacuumed twelve hours ago.

We do not overbook.

Ten vehicles, ten trips on the busiest evening. We turn away last-minute bookings when the calendar is full rather than dispatch a vehicle we are not sure about. It costs us revenue. It keeps us reliable.

We do not promise what we cannot deliver.

If you ask for something we cannot do, we will tell you. We will not say "yes" and figure it out later. The business does not survive that pattern.

What we will not do

Some lines we hold.

We do not run an Uber-style app. We do not do app-based instant booking. If you want a black car in eight minutes, that is what Uber Black is for. We are a different category. We take a quote request, prepare for the trip, and dispatch a chauffeur you have a phone number for.

We do not run discount promotions. The price is the price. Discounting in this category signals fleet utilization problems and we do not have those.

We do not chase national reach. We serve San Francisco, Marin, Napa, Sonoma, and the East Bay. SFO, Oakland, and San Jose airports. That is the geography we know. Anything outside it is not us.

We do not lobby for reviews. We ask once after every trip. If you write one, we are grateful. If you do not, that is fine too. The business is built on repeat clients, not five-star averages.

Reach us

Most calls are picked up by a person.

The phone rings in the dispatcher's office in Mill Valley. If we are on a trip when you call, you get one of us back within thirty minutes during operating hours, or first thing in the morning if you called late.

The quote-request form on the site goes to the same inbox. Same response time.

Ride with us

The first trip is the test. The second is the relationship.

If you have a trip coming up, send a quote request. We will tell you what it costs, which chauffeur is on the calendar, and what to expect.
